Bergen Archways and Erie Cut

UPDATES:
07/2010 Update: No real change in status. The talk of clearing out the brush and utilizing it as a highway has died down. There has been some talk of using it as a light-rail right of way or a park, but all plans have been pushed aside in order to address more pressing concerns.

DESCRIPTION:
The Bergen Archways and Erie Cut, a monumental engineering corridor that has contributed to Jersey City’s and New Jersey’s former prominence as a central railroad terminus, is the metropolitan area’s last remaining large railroad cut in its original form and splendor. The sheer sight of its astounding engineering elements conjures up an era of growth and prominence as dictated by the mighty Erie Railroad. It’s battered folding cliffs and arcing concrete portals exist as reminders of brilliant engineers and laborers. Its narrow nave of cascading Palisadian trap rock erupts in the viewer’s eyes like a receding apparition. To permit this unique historical site to be altered would be a loss without comparison.
