UPDATES:
On October 23, 2003, NJDOT unveiled plans to rehabilitate the historic stone arch bridge over Stony Brook and replace the modern concrete bridge over the flood plain. 12/05 RFPs have been sent out by the NJDOT. Progress on rehabilitation proposal is still in planning stages and the Environmental Services Div of the NJDOT submitted review criteria for consideration.
DESCRIPTION:
Constructed in 1792 to replace an earlier wooden bridge that was burned by Washington’s troops on their retreat to Princeton to hinder their pursuit by the British following the Battles of Trenton, this bridge is part of the Princeton Battlefield National Historic Landmark District. The bridge, a triple masonry arch, was sensitively enlarged in the early twentieth century. It carries State Highway 206 and is structurally threatened by a large number of tractor-trailer trucks that cross it at speeds approaching 55 miles per hour each day. The NJDOT was unwilling to impose weight limit restrictions that would protect the bridge at the time of the list’s publication.
