Theodore Roosevelt Memorial

DESCRIPTION:
The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial in Tenafly was a gift of local siblings Malcolm Sutherland Mackay and his sister Jennie C. Mackay. The Mackay family was very well known for their contributions and their civic involvement in Tenafly. Completed by sculptors Trygve Hammer and Fritz Hammargren, the memorial was completed in 1928 and placed at the center of Roosevelt Common. The memorial is a highly realistic stone relief of the former President and features a variety of animals and birds, with two life-sized sculpted bears flanking the relief. The animal depictions serve as a commemoration of the Roosevelt’s dedication to conservation. One of nineteen publicly accessible monuments to Theodore Roosevelt nationwide, this is the only one to acknowledge his dedication to conservation.

Boro provides for maintenance, paid for design and installation of two interpretive displays.

Application submitted to SOS for restoration funds. The Memorial was listed on the SR/NR as of 2006 and a final contract for landscaping is being let soon. Public rededication ceremony of the restored monument was held 10-29-06 with a keynote address by a board member of the Theodore Roosevelt Association.
